Self help for everyone

The developer Jukka Heininen says " I have interviewed thousands of people suffering from neck and shoulder pains, 95% of them were suffering strong daily pain. I often heard the following question...."Who can help me when I live alone?" and this got me thinking about what I could do to do to help them. After giving it a lot of thought and lots of experimentation I developed the Acute Hook"

A successful design

A step by step guide to a complete Acute Hook workout

The shoulder blades

Take hold of the hook with both hands and put the hook over the shoulder. Put the head of the hook next to the shoulder blade and press the head of the hook against the muscle and stretch it. Move the head of the hook up and down or sideways a few centimetres at a time. When you find a sore spot pull downwards on the handle and at the same time slightly push the handle upwards for the best results (it may sound complex but it's quite a natural movement anyway). Keep up the pressure for 10 - 20 seconds until the pain starts to ease. You can also rotate the shoulder as you hold the hook in position. This will also relax the muscles afterwards.

The trapezius muscle

The trapezius muscle is the large kite shaped muscle that lies across the top of the back and neck. The origin of the muscle (the attachment point that doesn't move) is the occipital bone and vertebrae and the insertion (bone to which it is attached that does move) is the scapula (shoulder blade) and the clavicle (collar bone). it is the muscle we use to draw the head back and lifts the collar bone as in shrugging. When you are working on the trapezius muscle the upper hand does the work by pulling down using a pumping motion as you move gradually along the muscle. This increases the elasticity or flexibility of the muscle which in turn allows the energy to flow naturally, the head will be able to turn more easily and eventually will have a greater range. By turning the handle of the hook to the side, so that it is no longer pointing into your diaphragm, you can treat the whole neck area.

The base of the skull

Put the head of the hook against the base of the skull where the neck muscles attach to the skull with the handle straight out in front of your face. Holding the end of the handle with one hand and the curve of the hook with the other rotate the hook making gentle movements with light pressure. This helps to free the circulation of blood to the head and the brain. Headaches, dizziness and other problems will lessen as the brain receives more oxygen. The acupressure points for the eyes will also be treated simultaneously.

The neck

Close the hook into a 'roller' position and hold it where the hook end meets the handle. Using the round front area of the hook roll it with suitable pressure along the neck area. Don't use it on the throat.

The chest area, stomach and legs

using the hook in the same roller position as for the neck area but now start to work on the muscles in the upper part of the chest, the pectoralis major with the pectoralis minor beneath them. These muscles are usually very tight, you can use the roller both horizontally and vertically. Continue using the roller in the same way down to the stomach area, the thighs and other leg muscles.

The small of the back, buttocks and long back muscles

Open the hook back up again and place it around your back, the handle should be pointing out to the front and the head of the hook pushed against the muscles next to the spine. If you are working on the muscles on the right of your spine then the hook should be around the left of your body and the end of the handle held by your right hand, the hook is held by the left hand to keep it in position. You can work the deep muscles of the buttocks (gluteus medius, gluteus minimus & gluteus maximus) with strong pressure but always take note of what is right for you. Using both hands to work this area keep moving the hook to find the "sweet spots" of the long back muscle (latissimus dorsi) and then work the back and leg muscles and the points where the muscles attach to the bone.

The upper part of the back

Put the hook under your armpit so that the head of the hook reaches the upper part of the back to work on the upper part of the long back muscles and to ease the tension under the shoulder blade and the shoulder area.

The thighs and other leg muscles

To relax the thigh and other leg muscles close the hook around your thigh keeping the handle on the inside. Do relaxing figure of eights with one hand and a gentle grip. With the smaller muscles you can turn the end of the hook on top of the handle, it is important to keep both ends of the hook gripped together when doing this to avoid any flesh being pinched!

The soles

The Hook's claim as "the best television accessory" comes to the fore when you use the hook to work on the acupoints of your feet. A diagram of the points is provided with the hook. Pull the Hook along the bottom of the feet towards the sore spots or hold the hook against the ground and move your foot.

How to care for the Acute Hook

The joint may becomes loose due to varying conditions, tighten the nut with a 8mm wrench or a Philips screwdriver. Clean the Hook with a damp cloth or fine sandpaper. You can also paint or decorate the Hook as you wish.
